- W2473302198 abstract "Patterns of child fostering in Kumasi, Ghana's second largest city, are examined in light of Goodenough's discussion of transactions in parenthood. The author attempts to determine norms underlying different kinds of child fostering which occur in an ethnically heterogeneous urban context, and discusses methodological problems involved in determining norms in a culturally heterogeneous field situation. Various types of child exchange are discussed in relation to traditional fostering practices, changing role of women in urban West Africa, and changing kinship patterns among rural and urban born immigrants. Transactions in parenthood occur between biological kin, fictive kin, and non-kin of same and of different ethnic groups. The implications of transactions in these different relational contexts is considered. In epilogue to Adoption in Eastern Oceania (Carroll 1970: 409ff.) Goodenough stresses necessity of an ethnography of parenthood. He points out that over and above functional analyses, we need to establish distinctive entitlements of parental roles in specific cultures. This is a prerequisite to ascertaining what rights and duties are claimed, transferred, delegated or shared in any transactions involving children. As far as I am aware, in studies of these transactions published so far, anthropologists have had good fortune to be dealing with units which they feel relatively secure in describing as cultures or societies, or at least as sub-cultures or part societies.2 They have been able to work with assumption that a single set of norms exists and is fairly well accepted by the group or the people they are describing. They can assume that a thorough ethnographic analysis could first specify distinctive entitlements of parental and other kinship roles, leading to an understanding of transactions involving these roles. In re-examining my own data in terms of this theoretical orientation I find I am unable to make these comforting initial assumptions. Without any specific intention of studying kinship, I conducted field work in an ethnographically heterogeneous immigrant community in city of Kumasi, Ghana, traditional" @default.
