- W2473366870 abstract "It has been known for a long time that occlusion of a coronary artery in dogs results in the frequent occurrence of ventricular arrhythmias and that these occur in different phases (Harris, 1950). In the first 15–30 min ventricular arrhythmias are particularly malignant, frequently leading to ventricular fibrillation. Then follows a period during which arrhythmias are rare, until the second phase of arrhythmias begins after 4–8 h. These can continue for several days. Although it is not known whether such a bimodal distribution occurs in all animals, including man, the early phase of arrhythmias may be related to the ‘pre-hospital’ phase of arrhythmias in humans with coronary artery disease. It is by no means certain that all ventricular arrhythmias, particularly fibrillation, occurring in the setting of coronary artery disease are caused by the electrophysiological alterations due to the cessation of blood flow to part of the ventricular myocardium. It is well known that, in the experimental animal, release of a coronary artery occlusion induces ventricular fibrillation much more frequently than does the occlusion itself, provided that the occlusion is released abruptly and not too long after the vessel was occluded (Tennant and Wiggers, 1935; Stephenson et al., 1960). It is also known that the majority of patients resuscitated from out-of-hospital fibrillation subsequently show no signs of myocardial necrosis (Baum et al., 1974)." @default.
