- W2473482358 abstract "What fascination do diaries hold for us? How do their intrinsic qualities embody feminist practice? Diaries speak to us without the need of a mediator, an authority who can initiate us into the mysteries of the text. Diaries are accessible not exclusive, comprehensible not arcane, and in their very accessibility they establish ties between the reader and the writer, between one human being and another. The connections intrinsic to the diary genre are many, joining us to our past selves, our projected identities, our roots in a collective yet differentiated women's past. Diaries are about community, not hierarchy, about communication, not authority. Hence, their inherent generic qualities are subversive to the literary establishment and to the patriarchal social order it perpetuates in its privileging of texts and genres, each ranked according to unquestioned standards. It is no mistake when Adrienne Rich refers to the journal as that profoundly female, and feminist, genre, for like feminism as literary and social practice, the diary questions by making connections and establishing community and communications among previously separated parts of experience ( On Lies, Secrets, and Silence, 1979, 217). An examination of published and manuscript diaries, such as those by Virginia Woolf and Ana'is Nin, as well as by little-known authors like Eliza Dickenson, Marianne Brougham, and Marianne Estcourt, can illuminate both the reasons diaries are excluded from traditional literary study and the connections diaries forge. Like feminist criticism, the diary, in its diversity of approach and focus, its melding of various disciplines, its tendency to mesh the inner with the outer, has been accused of looseness and a lack of rigor, the very antithesis of much canonical literature and literary criticism. These accusations against women's writing and women's bodies are" @default.
