• W2473485449 abstract "“Stop, I want to get off!”1 This plea for the world to come to a halt was the title of an article written in response to Tony Blair’s description of globalisation as an unstoppable process that seemed to have a life of its own, at the 1999 Labour Party Conference. Fairclough argues that new Labour discourse is an instance of what has been termed globalist discourse (Fairclough 2005a, 2006). In the present chapter, globalisation is established as a representative subcase of external change, and I use references to this phenomenon in the data to verify Fairclough’s globalist hypothesis. Traditionally a neo-liberal economic construct, globalisation is found to be framed as inevitable in new Labour discourse. But a twist to the globalist model is also identified in the discourse of the party, as external change in general and globalisation in particular tend to function as a threat to legitimise policy choices ranging from the liberalisation of the party to the war in Iraq. This leads to the argument that the party’s framing of external change and globalisation belongs to a wider new Labour discourse strategy to create what Mouffe (1998) calls “politics without adversary,” which ends up influencing the overall conceptualisation of change in NL.
