- W2473640567 abstract "During the 1550s, Antonio Musa Brasavola’s (1500–55) theory of the origins of the French disease within the body of a prostitute enjoyed a certain popularity in Venice through multiple publications in the original Latin, as well as in Italian, translated and with occasional commentary, depending on the edition, by Pietro Rostinio.1 The Italian language edition of Musa Brasavola’s French disease treatise apparently reached a wide audience, with a version in 1556 and reprints in 1559 and 1565. After the French invasion of Italy in 1494, he explained, a most beautiful prostitute served the French troops. At the opening of her womb was a putrefying sore; the combination of the humidity and putrefaction of that “place,” along with the rubbing of the male member against it, caused the male member to break out in ulcers. “And this illness began to stain one man, then two, and three, & one hundred, because this woman was a prostitute and most beautiful, and since human nature is desirous of coitus, many women had sexual relations with these men (and became) infected with this illness. ”2 This beautiful prostitute was responsible for starting the epidemic of the French disease that was dispersed through not only “all of Italy, France, and throughout all of Europe,” but also Asia and Africa.3 The only region that escaped the beautiful prostitute’s influence was India, where the disease was, according to Musa Brasavola, already well known, thereby making this woman the epidemiological equivalent of the “shot heard round the world. ”" @default.
