Fluorescence permitting localization and evaluation of the lesion was recognized in all 8 patients. Photo radiation with red argon-dye laser light obtained complete remission in 6 patients, with follow up from 6 to 18 months. To our knowledge this is the first report describing total regression of bladder tumors obtained byphotoradiation. Swelling and edema were noted within 20 minutes after argon-dye laser photo radiation therapy of bladder tumors. Necrosis and partial covering of the tumor by a whitish necrotic mass were noted after 3 days. The whitish mass covered the entire tumor at 7 to 14 days. Gradual exfoliation of the mass was followed by disappearance of the tumor and regeneration of normal mucosa at 9 to 10 weeks. © 1983 by The American Urological Association Education and Research, Inc.FiguresReferencesRelatedDetailsCited byAnidjar M, Cussenot O, Blais J, Bourdon O, Avrillier S, Ettori D, Villette J, Fiet J, Teillac P and Le Duc A (2018) Argon Laser Induced Autofluorescence May Distinguish Between Normal and Tumor Human Urothelial Cells: A Microspectrofluorimetric StudyJournal of Urology, VOL. 155, NO. 5, (1771-1774), Online publication date: 1-May-1996.Chang S, MacRobert A and Bown S (2018) Photodynamic Therapy on Rat Urinary Bladder with Intravesical Instillation of 5-Aminolevulinic Acid: Light Diffusion and Histological ChangesJournal of Urology, VOL. 155, NO. 5, (1749-1753), Online publication date: 1-May-1996.Marynissen J, Jansen H and Star W (2018) Treatment System for Whole Bladder Wall Photodynamic Therapy with in Vivo Monitoring and Control of Light Dose Rate and DoseJournal of Urology, VOL. 142, NO. 5, (1351-1355), Online publication date: 1-Nov-1989.Harty J, Amin M, Wieman T, Tseng M, Ackerman D and Broghamer W (2018) Complications of Whole Bladder Dihematoporphyrin Ether Photodynamic TherapyJournal of Urology, VOL. 141, NO. 6, (1341-1346), Online publication date: 1-Jun-1989.Manyak M, Matthews D, Smith P, Nochomovitz L, Glatstein E and Russo A (2018) Response of Normal Canine Ureter to Photodynamic Therapy Using a Cylindrical FiberJournal of Urology, VOL. 139, NO. 1, (199-203), Online publication date: 1-Jan-1988.Benson R (2018) Treatment of Diffuse Transitional Cell Carcinoma in Situ by Whole Bladder Hematoporphyrin Derivative Photodynamic TherapyJournal of Urology, VOL. 134, NO. 4, (675-678), Online publication date: 1-Oct-1985.Williams R (2018) Editorial CommentJournal of Urology, VOL. 134, NO. 4, (678-678), Online publication date: 1-Oct-1985.Selman S, Milligan A, Kreimer-Birnbaum M, Keck R, Goldblatt P and Britton S (2018) Hematoporphyrin Derivative Photochemotherapy of Experimental Bladder TumorsJournal of Urology, VOL. 133, NO. 2, (330-333), Online publication date: 1-Feb-1985.
