- W2473911371 abstract "Amongst the Olive Groves of Mezra Kenan Orhan (bio) Keywords Kenan Orhan, Fiction, Turkey, Kurd, refugee, immaculate conception Kemal and the pregnant woman drive west along the border from Kobane in silence. She’s more girl than woman, barely sixteen. Kemal knows some girls or friends with sisters around that age, and none of them are fit for rearing a child, domesticating a man, creating a home. They ride in silence because Kemal doesn’t know how to ask her if it’s all a hoax, if her claims of virginal conception were merely an attempt to pacify her shamed family. She keeps quiet, Kemal guesses, because her Turkish is bad, or because her family tried to kill her, or because she is tired from running away, but in fact it is none of these reasons. To the north, in tandem with the road, a barbed-wire fence runs the length of the Turkish border. Soldiers, half of them boys fulfilling their six months of military service, infest the guardhouses and checkpoints along the fence. They watch over the barren landscape of rocky hills and spiny, dried plants, so near the Euphrates that they wonder how a river with an ancient contract of fertility could forget to nurse its soil. The soldiers guard their posts in the heat, watching the border with weary eyes and fickle trigger-fingers. They make Kemal nervous. Kemal smuggles cigarettes, beer, and movies across the border from Syria to make a living while he practices drifting in the parking lot of his old high school. Kemal tells himself he doesn’t believe all this fantasy about a virgin mother because he isn’t superstitious and because of all the times and places for such a thing, it wouldn’t be here, it wouldn’t be now. He assures himself of his disbelief so often that he can’t help but grow suspicious. Askander has heard Turkish is the only language with a word for the way moonlight catches the open sea. He feels ashamed of his native Kurdish for having no equal. Yakamoz is useful for young men writing love poems, but Askander has never seen such beauty. The muddled water of the Euphrates moves thick in the dry season. In the spring, when the river is high, sandbars slice it into thin veins crowded by cattail, prosopis, skeletal reeds, and shoots of water lilies. [End Page 236] Yet in the amber mornings, when Askander comes down to fish, the sun climbs the peaks of the mountains to the east, and the water catches fire. It flows sluggishly from the melted caps in Anatolia and empties its molten-gold treasure into the Persian Gulf. If fireflies existed, is this how their bellies would shine? Askander wonders whether fireflies are make-believe, magic made on a computer screen, or if they only avoid the Middle East. Askander’s father was a fisherman and his mother a schoolteacher. He reads books instead of tending his lines and catches nothing when others take home catfish and mangar as long as their arms. Though now, in late summer, with low water and no competition, Askander might walk home with a fish. Today, with two fishing poles, he plops down on the riverbank and curls his toes into the cool sand. He casts his lines and sticks the poles in the bank next to him. He’s run out of books on the opulence of French monarchies, the intricacies of Habsburg diplomacy, and life in the trenches at Gallipoli. He searches YouTube on his phone for videos of fireflies before the government blocks the website again. Some people call them lightning bugs. What whimsy the name has, packing the might and splendor of Allah into the frailty of an insect. This, Askander thinks, is how men play god, squishing lightning bugs in their palms, harnessing, like Zeus, the supremacy of the immortal. Askander doesn’t bother to give his lines little shakes. Since it’s still running, he checks Twitter. Most of the people he follows don’t have much to say. Just the daily newspaper that tweets something every hour: “#LATEST Turkey confirms aerial attacks on PKK..." @default.
