- W2474559095 abstract "Proper riding posture can reduce the cycling injuries and enhance the performance. Previous studies have shown that the saddle height setup could affect both cycling performance and injury. But the effect of saddle forward-backward position still remained unclear. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of bicycle saddle forward-backward position on paddle efficiency and comfort. METHODS: Fifteen healthy male participants (age: 25.3±3.2 years, height: 172.3±3.2 cm, weight: 72.2±8.1 kg) without any musculoskeletal and neuromuscular injuries in the past 6 months were recruited in this study. We tested three different saddle positions including forward, central and backward positions (interval 5 cm). The central position was the posture which kept trunk lean 45 degrees and a knee flex 30 degrees with the foot at bottom dead point. Participants were asked to keep the cadence at 90 rpm and 150 W power output. The muscle activation was evaluated by EMG (sampling rate: 1000 Hz) by recording the gluteus maximus, rectus femoris, biceps femoris, tibialis anterior and gastrocnemius. Multi-axial force transducer (sampling rate: 1000 Hz) was used to detect the force and torque during pedaling. A visual scale was used to test the comfort during cycling. Statistical analysis was processed by analysis of variance (ANOVA) in repeated measures. The significant level was set at α=.05. RESULTS: Forward position had significantly larger paddle force (forward: 98.63±11.78, central: 89.21±14.89, backward: 88.98±14.15 N, p<.05), lower muscle activation (forward: 27.87±3.97, central: 30.24±4.27, backward: 29.97±4.06 %MVC, p<.05), better efficiency index (forward: 6.22±0.89, central: 5.25±1.22, backward: 5.15±1.09 N/%MVC, p<.05) and higher comfort scale (forward: 7.23±1.10, central: 6.69±0.97, backward: 6.50±1.04, p<.05). CONCLUSIONS: The saddle forward-backward position could affect both pedaling efficiency and comfort in cycling. Both saddle height and forward-backward setup should be considered in bike fitting to enhance pedaling performance and reduce injury.
