En el proceso de adaptacion a la vida diurna, la audicion puede derivar hacia la comunicacion intraespecifica (conducta de apareamiento, territorialidad). En una especie de Uraniidae se argumento que el organo timpanico estaba en proceso de degeneracion. Urania boisduvalli, especie diurna endemica de Cuba, conserva sus organos timpanicos bien desarrollados desde el punto de vista morfologico. Los machos de esta especie poseen ademas estructuras productoras de sonido. Mediante registro electrofisiologico extracelular de la actividad del nervio timpanico se encontro que la maxima sensibilidad (27 dB para los machos y 35 dB para las hembras) aparece entre 15 y 20 kHz. Las celulas A 1 y A 2 responden a los estimulos acusticos tanto artificiales como producidos por los machos conespecificos. El organo timpanico codifica los cambios en la intensidad y duracion del estimulo con aumento del numero de potenciales de accion por pulso, disminucion del periodo de latencia y reclutamiento, por lo que consideramos que es un organo totalmente funcional. No hay evidencias de que U . boisduvalli use el sonido en la conducta de apareamiento, pero observaciones de campo sugieren que la senal emitida por los machos es utilizada en la defensa del territorio. Spatially or temporally isolated from the echolocation signals of bats, the hearing organ degenerate; change its maximal sensitivity to low frequencies or conserve its characteristics of spectral sensitivity. In the process of adaptation to diurnal life, hearing could be used in intraspecific communication (mating behavior, territoriality). In one species of Uraniidae it had been postulated that the tympanic organs were degenerating. Urania boisduvalli , a Cuban endemic species presents tympanic organs morphologically well developed. In addition the males have functional sound producing structures. Extracellular electrophysiological recordings of the tympanic nerve showed that the maximal sensitivity (27 dB for males and 35 dB for females) appears between 15 and 20 kHz. The A 1 and A 2 cells respond to artificial sound pulses as well as to the signals emitted by the conspecific males. The tympanic organ codified the intensity and the duration of the stimuli with increase of the number of action potentials per pulse, decrease of the latent period and recruitment, evidencing that it is a functional organ. There is not evidence about the use of sound in the mating behavior in this species, but field observations suggest that the signal emitted by the males participates in the defense of the territory.
