- W2474827075 abstract "Economic analysis of the labour market traditionally ignores the dynamic relationship between the processes of commodity production and the social reproduction of labour. This leads to an analytical separation between the labourer's conditions of work and of life that imposes a reductive perspective on the analysis of the labour market and its structural dynamics. The systematic overlooking of the specific historical characteristics of the process of social reproduction of labour and of the tensions between production and social reproduction affects collective and individual bargaining on wages, working hours and social benefits. Wage relations are historically based on issues, forms of organisation and mediations that are centred on the production process; on the conditions of work more than of life. This overlooking of the role of social reproduction arises from the analytical and policy approach to the economic system. Analytically, the problem is how to locate the process of social reproduction of labour within the framework of the fundamental processes that shape the economic system, showing its relationship with the other main processes of distribution, production and exchange. At policy level, this means connecting issues such as wages, employment, hours of work and working conditions to the deeper level of the living conditions of labour. It also leads to a reconsideration of the actors involved in bargaining over wages, employment, activity rates and social benefits in a less divisive approach, i.e. taking into explicit account the complex network of social subjects that classical economists called the 'labouring population'. Family allowances are just a pale reflection of the problem. In order to grasp the implications involved in a perspective based on a new balance between production and reproduction, it is useful to introduce concepts such as: labouring population, total work (paid and unpaid), subsistence, standard of" @default.
