- W2474843770 abstract "This study was designed to compare the computer competencies of teachers in school districts that use an integrated learning system with those of teachers who use stand-alone computers. The purpose was threefold: (1) to identify the current level of computer competencies of public school teachers in the selected districts as reported by the teachers themselves, (2) to determine if there is a difference in the level of competency among teachers in schools with stand-alone computers and those using integrated learning systems, and (3) to provide a basis for speculation and further exploration of the current status of learning needs of public school teachers in regard to computer competencies.In this study teachers in the two participating school districts rated their own level of proficiency on fifty computer competencies that have been identified by the Texas Education Agency as essential for all educators. A five-point scale was used. Frequency distributions and t-tests for independent means were used to analyze the responses.There were 297 responses from the teachers in the two school districts that participated. It was found that one district rated itself proficient in six of the fifty competencies and the other district rated itself proficient in only five of those competencies. Although only the group that uses integrated learning systems rated itself proficient in any (1) of the nine categories of competencies, the group using stand-alone computers reported higher means in seven of the nine categories. In addition, seven of the nine categories of competencies indicated a significant difference between the scores of the two groups.In conclusion, the results indicated that neither participating group has any high degree of competency in computer technology. Also, teachers in the group that uses stand-alone computers tend to be more comfortable or knowledgeable in their eyes and have a greater sense of proficiency in terms of computer knowledge than those in the reporting district that uses an integrated learning system." @default.
