- W2475117956 abstract "Several recent studies have attempted to describe patterns of organization within assemblages of species by using morphology as an index of ecological relationship (Karr and James 1975; Gatz 1979; Ricklefs and Travis 1980; Findley and Black 1983; Travis and Ricklefs 1983; Schum 1984; Gilbert 1985; Harder 1985; Leisler and Winkler 1985; Niemi 1985). The advantages of this approach include the ease and repeatability of measurement and the comparability among studies (Ricklefs and Travis 1980). Morphology does not completely reproduce the subtleties of ecological relationships that are based on behavior and physiology. However, morphological measurements may reflect more accurately than samples of foraging behavior, diet, and habitat use the ecological relationships of a population. Thus, morphology represents an index of population interactions summed over scales of time and space. Studies of the correspondence between measurements of ecological and morphological variables have shown that most of the variance among species in ecological measurements is associated with variance in morphological measurements, suggesting that morphology is a good predictor of ecology (Karr and James 1975; Miles and Ricklefs 1984). However, the proportion of variance in the morphological measurements that is explained by the ecological measurements is lower than expected. Whether the additional information present in morphology is irrelevant to local ecological interactions or reflects aspects of ecological relationships not measured in field studies has not been determined. At present, one may feel equally justified in describing the relationships between species by morphological variables or by direct ecological measurement. Morphological structure of communities has intrinsic interest, as well. But if such indirect indexes are to have any bearing on ecological perspectives, it is important to determine the matching of morphology and ecology." @default.
