Walmsley was a Catholic cleric, and for a brief period his prophecies looked as if they might bring about their own fulfillment. By equating the Reformation with the locusts of ninth chapter of Revelation, Walmsley came to the conclusion that between 1821 and 1825 there was to be a cataclysmic massacre of Protestants. Extracts from ‘Pastorini’ found a widespread distribution among the Irish Catholic peasantry and urban working classes in the form of crudely printed penny broadsheets. The Pastorini incident highlights the explosive and potentially revolutionary nature of the millenarian narrative of history. Similarly, a number of popular ballads attest to the millenarian hopes more significantly, Daniel O'Connell's charismatic leadership was crowned with the messianic mantle of ‘Liberator’ borrowed, in part, from a popular prophetic tradition." @default.
