- W2476185849 abstract "Since their respective debut volumes of 1973 and 1985, Ai and Carol Ann Duffy have riveted readers with a dazzling array of characters that seem to have walked off the television screen or front page. Ai’s literary lineup includes Hollywood icons such as Marilyn Monroe and James Dean, but she remains best known for her chilling portraits of remorseless batterers, child abusers, and serial killers. If Ai voices the desperations of America’s Most Wanted, Duffy voices the disaffections of contemporary Britain. Her gallery of outcasts includes displaced immigrants and disillusioned wives, as well as disturbing psychopaths. Both poets’ notoriety comes from their unflinching portraits of violent male characters in monologues hardwired with media discourse. Ai’s poems can seem like random acts of lyric mayhem as their speakers wield an arsenal of “knives, axes, blades, or pitchforks,” to cite from Carolyn Forche’s response to Killing Floor (F2). If Duffy’s signature characters are edgy, Ai’s go over the edge. Although Britain’s current poet laureate has not created as many violent characters as Ai, her voicing of a serial rapist-killer introduces “shockingly ‘unpoetic’ material into poetry,” according to Ian Gregson (97). Like Ai, Duffy draws from sensational journalism and crime cases for her most notorious dramatic monologues; Duffy evokes the Yorkshire Ripper, while Ai voices the perpetrators of the Atlanta Child Murders and the JonBenet Ramsey murder.1" @default.
