- W2476292992 abstract "This chapter discusses the present status of Compton imaging in the nuclear medicine application. Following a brief history of the technique, this chapter reviews the physical factors that influence system performance. Compton cameras make it possible to image a whole new range of radiotracers with higher resolution and higher sensitivity than collimated cameras. In addition they offer a method for improving the spatial resolution of PET close to the limits fixed by positron range. This method permits investigating methods of direct 3D imaging of radionuclides without an image reconstruction step. The emphasis has been on PIN silicon pad detectors. This chapter also discusses analytical predictions of Compton camera performance for quantification and detection tasks in comparison to collimated cameras and also shows calculated values of detection sensitivity for two different system geometries. This chapter also discusses methods of image reconstruction, describes prototype hardware implementations and ends with a discussion of future possibilities for Compton imaging in nuclear medicine and outstanding questions." @default.
