- W2476310304 abstract "Proton-transfer studies in apolar aprotic so lvents (E < 15, ~ < 8.3x I 0-30 cm, ErN ::::: 0.0-0. 3)1 are of significant interest. In such solvents which lack hydrogen bond/ electron pair donor/acceptor property, compl ications out of specific so lute-so lvent interactions are greatl y minimised, if not eliminated. Study ing proton transfer from/to an acid/base in these solvents, however, requires the use of a reference base/acid and the proton transfe lTed product is an ion-pai r. A number of systematic investigations on thermodynami c and analytica l aspects of proton transfer among a wide-range of acids and bases were made in several apolar aproti c solvents using electronic, vibrat ional and NMR spectroscopiesl -14 Acidities/basicities measured in these solvents as compared to water are, as expected, considerabl y closer to ' intrinsic' ac idities/bas iciti es2. • Further, the ac idity/basicity of a substrate in such solvents was found to be influenced signi ficantl y by solvent properties bes ides electronic properties of the substrate and structure of the ionpair product. However, the interest on the effect of apolar aprotic solvents has been limited onl y to the comparison of the order of relative acidities/basicities in different sol vents or at best to the dependence of the equilibrium constant on Kirkwood 's function of dielectric constant, (E -l)/(2E +I), and no detailed analysis on whether the effect of such so lvents is simply electrostatic or contributed significantly by dispersion and other interactions, has been made. In the present study, a quantitati ve analysis of relative contributions of electrostatic, dispersion and other interactions to solvent effects on proton transfer equilibrium between m-f1uorobenzoic acid and the carbino l base of crystal vio let, the reaction of choice in the study, in eight apolar aprotic solvents using both one and multiparameter approaches have been carried out and the results are discussed ." @default.
