- W2476338062 abstract "“One can hope to understand the forces that govern behaviour only if one includes in the representation the whole psychological situation” stated Kurt Lewin in 1936. He went on to formulate his famous and often-cited equation: B = f (PE). According to this equation, behavior is a function of the person and the environment. Considerable efforts were made to investigate the person-side of the equation, yet the environment and its psychological representation were neglected. In 1968, the book Personality and Assessment by Walter Mischel raised again the importance of considering not only the personality but also the situation, resulting in the person–situation debate and eventually interactionism. The lack of a situational taxonomy, however, as opposed to various successful descriptions of human personality structure, favored the importance of the latter over the former. This chapter reviews Lewin's equation with respect to the person–situation debate and its main arguments and concepts: the personality and situational taxonomies. One important aspect in recent times is the redefinition of situation. Newer taxonomies no longer try to structure the situation per se but rather interindividual differences in situation perception. Particular attention is paid to these models of subjective situation perception. Their interaction with personality will be examined, as well as recently developed tools for their assessment. Summarizing these new developments in the field, we conclude that by inclusion of the psychological situation, a new way forward presents itself for a better assessment of personality and the prediction of behavior." @default.
