- W2476867520 abstract "As one of the most potent lethal toxins known, palytoxin (PTX) has attracted attention from a broad range of investigators (1). The varieties of physiological and biochemical effects of these non-protein toxins (mw 2659-2677) from the genus (Coelenterata) palythoa provide a dizzying choice of toxic mechanisms. Almost all mammalian tissues or cells studied so far respond to PTX (2). The reported effects range from membrane depolarization (3-10), increased Na+ (11,12) and Ca2+ influx (13), K+ efflux (11,14-16), stimulation of arachidonic acid release [through deesterification of membrane lipids (2)], stimulation or induction of neurotransmitter (norepinephrine) release (13,17), inhibition of Na+/K+-ATPase (10,11,14,18), induction or stimulation of contraction of smooth muscle (3,13,17-19), promotion of actions of tumor-producing compounds (20), inhibition of action of growth-related factors (21) (by down regulation of their specific membrane receptors), and erythrocyte haemolysis (22). As is our tendency, we molecular pharmacologists are attempting to identify one primary action of" @default.
