- W2476884912 abstract "Arsenic and selenium are both metalloids found in the environment. Arsenic is considered as a significant threat for human health on the basis of its toxicity and occurrence, while selenium, in contrast to arsenic, is a required micronutrient within the appropriate amount. Whether a toxin or micronutrient, cells accumulate both metals. Arsenic and selenium are coupled in biogeochemical cycles and coexist in the rhizosphere soil. Hence, their interactive effects occur during uptake, assimilation, and transformation within the plants. However, the exact mechanism of their interaction is still poorly understood in plants. Mostly, inorganic forms of both metalloids are more toxic as compared to their organic forms, and both forms exist in the soil. There is a lack of information available on the interactive effects of arsenic and selenium, especially in terrestrial or crop plants. Selenium is also known to support the expression of selenoproteins, which include glutathione peroxidise and other antioxidants involved in the detoxification process and also as cancer-chemoprotectives; hence biofortification of foods with selenium has been suggested in several reports. On the other hand, arsenic has no known biological function that helps in the growth and development of plants. In addition, several studies have suggested that selenium reduces the risk of arsenic toxicity in plants, and arsenic inhibits the anticarcinogenic effects of selenium. In this chapter, we summarize the participation and interaction of both metalloids in plants and how this information is being used to generate plants that are arsenic-resistant and also selenium-fortified. Furthermore, roles of signaling molecules are also discussed to mitigate arsenic-induced damages." @default.
