- W2477492083 abstract "IntroductionElectronic portfolios (or E-portfolios) have been utilized in many professions across the world including nursing (Garrett & Jackson, 2006; von Konsky & Comfort, 2010), veterinary science ( Widdowson, 2010), computing (Marriott & Chomba, 2010), and engineering (Botterill, White, & Steiner, 2010) to organize professional artifacts for career advancement. Along with these discipline-specific applications of E-portfolios (EPs), teacher education has advanced the integration of EPs within preservice teacher education programs (Adamy & Milman, 2009; Penny & Kinslow, 2006; Rowley & Dunbar-Hall, 2009; Rowley, 2013; Yancey, 1997). Accordingly, EPs have been implemented to support preservice teacher candidate learning and reflection, showcase achievements for career advancement, as well as, provide data for assessing institutional accreditation.Commonly, three types of EPs have been integrated into preservice teacher education programs within the United States. First, learning portfolios are used to engage preservice teachers in inquiry about their teaching and document growth over time (Stefanakis, Meier, Hehir, & Torff, 2002; Strudler & Wetzel, 2005; Wolf & Dietz, 1998; Zeichner& Wray, 2001). Second, capstone or credential portfolios are used to capture preservice teacher proficiency prior to teacher licensure (Snyder, Lippincott, & Bower, 1998; Strudler & Wetzel, 2005; Zeichner & Wray, 2001). One contemporary example of a credential EP is the edTPA assessment, which has been implemented among several states across the United States. Last, showcase or employment portfolios are used to document achievements as a way of presenting artifacts for career advancement (Stefanakis et al., 2002). Despite the type of portfolio integrated within a teacher education program, researchers document a central, positive learning outcome for preservice teacher candidates: A keen awareness of reflecting on practice (Stefanakis et al., 2002).PurposeAlthough investigations have largely been concentrated on examining general teacher education populations, a growing number of studies have been conducted with music teacher education programs outside of the United States (Rowley, 2013; Taylor, Dunbar-Hall, & Rowley, 2012). Yet, little is known about the use of EPs within music teacher education in the United States. Thus, the purpose of this article is to present a review of empirical research published between 2003-2013 investigating the use of EPs in preservice music teacher education programs within the United States. The question that guides this systematic review is how are EPs utilized within US music teacher education programs? Results are organized by purpose or model outlined from the extant literature: learning EPs, credential EPs, and employment EPs. Each model of EP concludes with a synthesis and discussion for music teacher education. The review concludes with directions for future study.MethodSampling ProcedureThis section describes elements of the critical and systematic research review process, including the method for selecting and categorizing papers included in this review. Helmsley-Brown and Sharp (2003) describe a systematic review as: (a) addressing specific research questions; (b) documenting the methodology for a literature search process; (c) establishing criteria for literature inclusion and exclusion based on the scope of the review; and (d) provide a clear presentation of the findings. A key word search was conducted in the SAGE full-text collection, JSTOR, and Google Scholar databases. The following keyword terms were selected to capture papers for review: electronic portfolios, e-portfolios, eportfolios, and music teacher education. After screening 80 titles and abstracts, 68 papers were identified for review on the following initial inclusion criteria:1) The use of E-portfolios was empirically studied within a music teacher education program for a learning, credential, or employment outcome. …" @default.
