- W2477528305 abstract "This chapter discusses the shifting functions of writing in contemporary communication environments and focuses on the social and modal affordances of digital learning resources (DLRs) particular to online learning. Online platforms, of which virtual learning environments are an apt example (e.g., Moodle), provide insight into the changing uses and forms of writing as well as its implications for learning. Understanding the function of writing online is central to comprehending contemporary notions of composition, most notably how the modal resources – still and moving images, layout, colour, frames along with writing - for materialising meanings and learning on the page and on screens. This chapter aims to describe, explore and analyse the features of composition from both a technological and social orientation. The focus on online learning is two fold: firstly, digital learning resources are increasingly becoming a salient aspect of formalised schooling and secondly, virtual learning environments are significant sites that involve writing along with other modes for communicating meaning and representing learning. Examples of composition from a virtual learning environment are drawn upon as instances to elucidate how features of composition – meaning-making using a range of social and technical resources – are reconfigured among students and educators within the virtual learning environment. How learning transpires is changing, as is the function of writing, and this chapter will explicate these shifts in the context of multimodality and e-learning. The chapter concludes with a brief discussion future directions in relation to digital learning resources and learning in online environments." @default.
