- W2477909448 abstract "This chapter discusses various aspects of the pesticide biosensors. Pesticide biosensors are highly useful in agriculture, the food industry, and the medical sector, whereas their miniaturized sensor strips or kits are highly advantageous and applicable in domestic applications for checking the water quality for daily use. The selectivity and sensitivity of biosensors are governed by the biocatalysts, which include enzymes, antibodies, whole cells, and artificial receptors such as molecularly imprinted polymers. Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) isolated from various organisms is used in the majority of pesticide biosensors and is superior because of the strong enzyme inhibition by organophosphorus pesticides that enables a higher sensitivity. The other often-employed enzymes in pesticide biosensors include acetolactate synthase, acid phosphatase, alkaline phosphatase, tyrosinase, and ascorbate oxidase. The two principles used in electrochemical pesticide biosensor design are enzyme inhibition or hydrolysis of pesticide. Between these two approaches, inhibition-based biosensors are more widely employed in analysis due to the simplicity and wide availability of the enzymes. The direct enzymatic hydrolysis of pesticide is also extremely attractive for biosensing, because the catalytic reaction is superior and faster than the inhibition-based one. Immunosensors can interface with various detection systems such as electrochemical analysis, piezoelectric detection and surface plasmon resonance analysis. In piezoelectric immunosensors, the sensor surface is usually coated with an antibody or an antigen (hapten) and the mass variation induced by the antigen–antibody binding is correlated to the concentration of the antigen. Optical immunosensors are based on the measurement of the absorption or emission of light induced by the immunoreactants. Use of a multianalyte immunosensor is highly advantageous for field applications as it allows several compounds in a single run to be determined, irrespective to the nature of the target molecules." @default.
