- W2478049207 abstract "To the Editor:This letter concerns the selected report, “Experimental Study for Rapid Sterilization of the Flexible Fiberoptic Bronchoscope” (Chest 66:723-724, 1974) by Kato and Matsushima. There are many errors in this report, and your readers might be seriously misinformed by the report. For example, the report erroneously refers to “complete rapid sterilization.” The difference between “sterilization” and “disinfection” is well understood.1Spaulding Groschel Hospital disinfectants and antiseptics.in: Manual of Clinical Microbiology. Williams & Wilkins, Baltimore1974: 852-857Google Scholar, 2Spaulding Chemical disinfection of medical and surgical materials.in: Lawrence CA Block SS Disinfection, Sterilization, and Preservation. Lea & Febiger, Philadelphia1968: 517-531Google Scholar The type of disinfectant, the type of microbes used (vegetative bacteria and fungi), and the type of microbiologic assay techniques reported by Kato and Matsushima could possibly refer to disinfection, but can in no way refer to sterilization. For another example, the results appear to indicate that 1,000 to 70,000 bacterial colonies per milliliter remained “after rapid sterilization.” This is either a factual error, or possibly an error of grammar, organization, or translation. Furthermore, no indication is given in the report of the length of exposure time allowed for contact between the bacteria and the disinfectants. Still another problem of this report is that the question, “What is bronopol?” is left unanswered. Furthermore, concerning technique, to report that “there was no ambient bacterial contamination after exposure of a Petri dish for five minutes” is about as meaningful as reporting that “there were no fish in the sea after dangling a hook for five minutes.” There were still more errors.I don't know what can be done to correct the errors of this report. Hopefully, most readers will also immediately be aware of these errors and disregard the report.
