- W2478089025 abstract "I have read with great interest the many scholarly studies in this volume on Khrushchev and his times and, as someone who worked closely with Khrushchev, having previously worked with Stalin and Molotov at the end of the war, I am grateful for this opportunity to complete the picture with some personal touches. I was recently given a similar opportunity to add my personal contribution to a University of Wales series of studies on the foreign policy of the Labour government from 1945 to 1951, mainly therefore on Ernest Bevin’s record as Foreign Secretary in the immediate post-war years. While Somerset and the TUC on the one hand, and the borderlands between Russia and the Ukraine and Stalin’s Communist Party on the other, provided very different backgrounds, and while I would not want to carry the comparison too far, either in terms of political morality or of far-sighted wisdom, there was something these two men had in common, a deep earthy humanity and sense of humour, an intense curiosity in events and people, a sort of peasant cunning most valuable for political infighting at home and abroad, knowledge based on self-education stemming, as Bevin once put it to King George VI, from the hedgerows of experience, and last but not least a capacity to learn and move with the times." @default.
