- W2478097361 abstract "In this final chapter, I will discuss the attempt by Sylvia Walby, in the course of a number of linked publications, to establish a particular view of patriarchal systems. The critique will be informed by the guidelines of a past-modern realism in general but, more specifically, will be directed by the insistence (articulated in Chapters 2 and 4) that systems are ontologically the emergent properites of many local interactions and interconnections across time and space, and that, consequently, they cannot be treated any differently in terms of ontology than a single highly localised social event. In principle, systems can be analysed in the ACA Contextualiser frame of the player grid. In practice, this is hardly possible. The consequence is that epistemology and methodology are called upon to be creative, flexible and imaginative, to develop ways of thinking about the systems that traverse all our lives, but to develop them in ways that do not do violence to the rich, complex ontology that we have made central to the whole project of past-modern realism. To develop the capacity to think about systems in more adequate ways than hitherto is, to my mind, one of the most pressing tasks faced by sociologists. It is a task that has, thus far, frustrated some of the most well-equipped and agile minds (cf Joas, 1991, pp. 97–118; Habermas, 1991, pp. 250–64; McCarthy, 1991, pp. 119–39)." @default.
