The base geology/lithology of a region is an important determinant of the geomorphology and landforms that can develop in the region. This chapter focuses on the structural features (landforms) that affect ecosystem processes. The structure of desert landscapes reflects the effects of low rainfall. Piedmonts are graded slopes of alluvial materials extending outward from the base of mountains, mesas, or hills. Alluvial fans are one of the most common landforms in intermontane desert regions. Ephemeral streams vary considerably in terms of the length and breadth of a stream channel, the complexity of channel morphology, and the riparian plant communities that develop on channel margins. The model proposed by Tongway and Ludwig (1990) relating to the grove–intergrove run-off and run-on relationships is briefly discussed in the chapter. Stone strewn surfaces are common features in arid environments. Rivers in desert regions may be conveniently divided into those that originate in wet mountainous areas and traverse a desert and those that originate in semiarid or arid regions. Sand dunes are important features of the driest deserts but a less common feature of semiarid deserts. Extensive desert landforms interact with precipitation and wind to establish particle-size gradients." @default.
