- W2479085617 abstract "The sudden introduction of rams just before the normal breeding season stimulates the breeding activity of ewes and helps in the advancement of the breeding season. Puberty of ewe lambs may also be advanced by the sudden introduction of the rams. The breeding season may be prolonged and length of the oestrous period is shortened by the introduction of the ram. Rams may contribute to variation in litter size of their mates through differences in fertilizing capacity of their semen or through the prenatal survival of their offspring. Fertility in the flock could be stepped up by increasing the frequency of mating of the ewe through increasing the ram/ewe ratio and by mating at the optimum time, which differs according to type of insemination and to breed. Sexual performance tests of rams have often been reported as not being closely related to the actual fertility obtained after natural mating in the flock. Replacement of rams which show little or no sexual activity during the first 1 or 2 weeks of mating may be more practical than to test the activity of all rams before they are used." @default.
