- W2479115503 abstract "When in The Mill on the Floss George Eliot removes the addictions of the characters from the mimetic level on which addictions occur in ‘Janet’s Repentance’ to the figurative addictions of the father (to litigation) and the daughter (to passionate romance), George Eliot initiates a pattern she sustains in three more works of fiction: ‘The Lifted Veil,’ ‘Brother Jacob,’ and Silas Marner. In these three works, drinking/drug-related substances or activities represent habits which characters either do or do not conquer and help reveal the sophistication of her conception of addiction. By this time, George Eliot has expanded the related activities to involve not only drinking and drugs but also compulsions stemming from weaving, hoarding, gambling, and story-telling, particularly as associated with political volatility and diverted heritage. Indeed, all three of these narratives deal with compulsion and demonstrate an expertise on the topic of addiction unusual for her period. In light of D.A.Miller’s description of reading itself as addictive, it is interesting that these parables include George Eliot’s shortest works. They do not encourage a continued involvement with themselves." @default.
