- W2479192404 abstract "The ability to affect outcomes in international relations is limited by the power to shape events and by international society’s governing norms: sovereignty and non-intervention. To punch above its weight, a middle-ranking power like the UK exploits its close relations with the US and membership of key international organisations, notably the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), the G8, the European Union (EU), and the Commonwealth. With the exception of the EU, all in one way or another are the result of Britain’s once great power status. From the beginning, New Labour has seen this legacy as an opportunity to tackle the challenge of globalisation. To have any influence on the future, the argument goes, foreign policy must be geared towards shaping the direction that globalisation and change takes. On this view, the ability to affect outcomes in international relations affects the ability to shape what happens at home. Where possible, the UK has led on key issues: development and eradicating poverty, the promotion of human rights, democracy and good government, encouraging openness and liberalisation. Where necessary, working through multilateral and co-operative means, the UK has sought to exercise influence via the legitimacy of the arguments that it is able to wield.KeywordsEuropean UnionInternational Atomic Energy AgencyForeign PolicyWorld Trade OrganisationEnergy SecurityThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
