- W2479398756 abstract "Life’s Little Ironies at once departs from and develops the subject matter and technique of Hardy’s earlier stories. While Wessex Tales and A Group of Noble Dames are historical and rural, the major events of these stories — with the significant exceptions of ‘To Please His Wife’, ‘The Fiddler of the Reels’, and the collection of sketches called ‘A Few Crusted Characters’ — take place in an unspecified present. The volume resembles the two preceding ones in differing ways: as in Wessex Tales, its narrative voice assumes a rhetorical stance — this time ironic rather than pastoral — which teaches the reader to interpret events from a particular perspective; as in A Group of Noble Dames, social conventions play an important part both in the formation of character and in the development of the action. But whereas in A Group of Noble Dames these conventions are linked to a particular period in history, in Life’s Little Ironies they are seen as forces operating in the present, and among the respectable middle classes to which many of Hardy’s readers belonged. This shift to an explicit concern with contemporary problems is an expression of Hardy’s tendency at the end of his fiction-writing career to question outspokenly both the social conventions of the time and the literary conventions created by and supportive of them.KeywordsGiant KillerShort StoryFairy TaleSocial ConventionPassionate ObsessionThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
