- W2479968589 abstract "Georg Lukics was probably the first author to use the concept of romantic anticapitalism; the term appeared in his writings during the 1930s. Although he never developed a systematic definition of it, some elements are implicit in his philosophical and literary works. Luktcs perceived romanticism not as an aesthetic or literary category but as a broad cultural configuration, present in politics, philosophy, sociology, political economy, and religion - as well as in art and literature. And he saw the link between romanticism and capitalism, the difference between the Romantic form of anticapitalist consciousness and other forms of it. The Romantic criticism of modern bourgeois civilization is based on precapitalist social or cultural values. Romantic anticapitalism is one of the main styles of thought in modern times, one of the most influential Weltanschauungen in European culture since the end of the 17th century. During Lukics's initial development - the early 20th century - it was the dominant world view in German and Central European intellectual life.' Nothing is more perplexing and contradictory than romantic anticapitalism. Its enigmatic ambiguity is marvelously represented by the Leon Naphta character in Thomas Mann's The Magic Mountain. A Jesuit communist (of Jewish origin) and an arch enemy of the liberal philanthropist Settembrini, Naphta celebrates the struggle of the Church Fathers against capitalism and is sympathetic to the Romantic Movement, with its fantastic double meaning, incorporating both reaction and revolution.2 Lulkics has frequently been presented as the real model for Thomas Mann's literary creation, and there is at least partial truth in this contention.3" @default.
