- W2480324061 abstract "Vincent Descombes, seeing in Althusser’s later philosophical position an abandonment of the attempt to give Marxism an epistemological foundation, argues that with this the Althusserian undertaking is brought to ‘an official close’.1 I do not think the position is so simple as this, but there is no doubt that others, several of whom had shared the project of Althusser’s earlier work, took the self-critical path much further than did Althusser himself. In some ways, the very audacity of that original project, and the scope of its implications (some of which I have briefly sketched in Chapters 6 and 7) provoked a critical rejection which could be no less all encompassing. Out of what may be seen as the internal decomposition of structural Marxism as a more or less unified programme of philosophical and social scientific research was to emerge a revolt on behalf of the subject and subjectivity, and an irrationalism, both no less global in their implications than had been the Althusserian commitment to the exclusion of the demands of the subject in the name of scientific reason. I shall, in this chapter, be concerned with some of these developments on the French intellectual scene, and with their echoes in the English-speaking world. In Chapter 9 I shall be considering some critical responses to Althusserianism form historians and sociologists which are more limited in scope, if often not less passionate and intemperate in their denunciations." @default.
