- W2480371337 abstract "Midbrain dopamine neurons play a critical role in numerous neurological functions, such as motor co-ordination and memory. This book chapter looks at the origins of this population and the genetic cascade involved in their development. It begins with a definition of what dopamine is and where in the adult rodent brain it is produced. It then focuses on the anatomy and formation of the midbrain region. The formation of the midbrain involves the actions of specific transcription factors, which subdivide the region into broad territories, and the correct functioning of signalling centers (such as the floor plate and the isthmic organizer), which release molecules that have a strong influence on the patterning of the surrounding areas. Several of these transcription factors and secreted molecules are discussed with respect to their role in the development of midbrain dopamine neurons. The chapter then outlines the generation of the progenitor cells in the ventral midbrain that give rise to midbrain dopamine neurons. This process also requires the correct timing of certain transcription factors, some of which are previously involved in the formation and patterning of the midbrain. As the progenitor cells mature, they migrate ventrally and become immature dopamine neurons. The next section of this chapter is dedicated to behavior of the cells and the genes that are involved in the maturation of the immature dopamine neurons. The final two segments of the chapter outline the terminal differentiation and maintenance of midbrain dopamine neurons. Terminal differentiation involves the migration of the dopamine neuron into their correct position and the production of dopamine. The maintenance of midbrain dopamine neurons briefly presents what is known about the maintained expression of certain genes in the midbrain dopamine neurons that play a key role in this process. The book chapter concludes with a perspective section." @default.
