• W2480431389 abstract "In experimental animals, peripheral nerve injury, particularly one that produces inflammation at the lesion site, produces a retrograde reaction in axotomized neuron somata that initiates a series of changes within the environment of the dorsal root ganglia (DRG). Satellite glia proliferate, particularly around larger-diameter neuron somata, and macrophages and lymphocytes invade from the blood. After days to weeks, depending on the site of the lesion, sprouts arise from sympathetic perivascular terminals and/or as collaterals of axotomized neurons and spread throughout the DRG. Later, a few, mostly large-diameter, sensory neurons become surrounded by interwoven baskets or rings of varicose norepinephrine-containing terminals. Similar rings are formed by axon collaterals of peptidergic and probably nonpeptidergic nociceptive neurons. Peptidergic and sympathetic axons may encircle the same neuron, or target nearby neurons independently. Some sympathetic and calcitonin gene-related peptide-containing sprouts also contain galanin, implying that the parent neurons have been axotomized. Sprouting follows the synthesis of neurotrophins by satellite glia whereas the formation of perineuronal rings is dependent on their expression of p75, which presumably concentrates neurotrophins around neurons. However the perineuronal terminals lie mainly within the glial sheath. Evidence that norepinephrine or peptides released by these relatively rare structures can modify the discharge of the target neurons is limited. The relation between the occurrence of rings and hyperalgesic behavior is doubtful. While a functional role remains possible, sprouting in the DRG after nerve damage may simply be a reaction to the production of neurotrophins by inflammatory cells." @default.
