- W2480432851 abstract "Building information modelling (BIM) is a technology promoted by governments and construction practitioners as a solution to the problems of low productivity, inefficient communication and limited collaboration in the construction industry. It facilitates the virtual modelling of buildings and allows for information about the building to be stored and updated in a central coordinated model, forming a reliable basis for multidisciplinary decision making during the building’s entire life cycle. However, there remains a limited understanding of the changes that BIM actually introduces to the structure of inter-organisational communication and its impact on project participants’ roles and relationships. In this research study, these issues are addressed through a comparative study of two construction projects: one that utilised BIM, and one that did not. Social network analysis (SNA) was employed as an analytical method to examine the inter-organisational communication networks in relation to two types of information exchange- design development and cost management during the construction stages of the two projects. Comparative SNA studies were conducted focussing on network density, path length and actor centrality. The research findings revealed the potential for BIM to improve inter-organisational communication with the BIM-enabled project exhibiting a higher density of communication and shorter path lengths between project participants, indicating timely access to information. In addition, the findings identified the high centrality of the ‘BIM Manager’ and ‘BIM Coordinator’, demonstrating the effectiveness of these two new roles in managing the flow of communication in construction teams. It is concluded that BIM has the potential to act as a ‘catalyst’ for change within the construction industry, leading towards improved communication and collaboration." @default.
