- W2480496401 abstract "This chapter discusses the evolution of anti-aging action of caloric restriction (CR). Most evolutionary biologists no longer hold the belief that aging is an evolutionary adaptation with a genetic program similar to that coding for development. In 1989, Harrison and Archer addressed the question of the evolution of the life-prolonging and anti-aging actions of CR. Their hypothesis was based on the fact that in a protected environment, the span of female reproductive life of most species of mammals is about half of the maximal life span. This hypothesis led to the prediction that CR's anti-aging actions should be greatest in species with the shortest reproductive life span. In 1989, Phelan and Austad challenged this hypothesis on the grounds that reproductive senescence is largely irrelevant to life in the wild because post-reproductive individuals are rarely found in nature. Holliday proposed a hypothesis of the evolution of CR's life-prolonging action in terms of the Disposable Soma Theory of Aging. Masoro and Austad embraced and expanded the view of Holliday; they pointed out that in nature, animals experience two kinds of food shortages: predictable shortages and unpredictable short-term shortages. The chapter also explores computer modeling and testing hypotheses." @default.
