- W2480589964 abstract "On 25 May 1895, in London’s Central Criminal Court, Justice Alfred Wills sentenced Oscar Wilde to two years’ hard labor for committing acts of ‘gross indecency’ with other men. In his sentencing speech, Wills said to Wilde: ‘The crime of which you have been convicted is so bad that one has to put stern restraint upon one’s self to prevent one’s self from describing, in language which I would rather not use, the sentiments which must rise to the breast of every man of honour who has heard the details of these two terrible trials.’1 After affirming the jury’s verdict, Wills concluded: ‘It is no use for me to address you. People who can do these things must be dead to all sense of shame, and one cannot hope to produce any effect on them. It is the worst case I have ever tried.’2 This speech has rightly been read as a moment of Foucauldian subjectivation par excellence: a moment when the subject is constructed in and through the disciplinary discourses that would seem merely to describe him. In this instance, Wills’s language produces a type of individual . ‘People who can do these things’ . over and against an imaginary norm . ‘every man of honour’ . which is produced and legitimated at the same time, and at the stigmatized party’s expense.3 These scathing remarks, which Wilde was not allowed to counter as he was led out of the courtroom, would license over a century of homophobic discrimination and abuse, and mark a clear turning point in the history of sexuality.4" @default.
