- W2480831304 abstract "C. S. Lewis called it “the greatest long poem in the nineteenth century”;1 John Todhunter had in 1880 already declared it “the supreme English poem of the nineteenth century”.2 Even those who are unwilling to accept these assertions in the light of The Prelude, In Memoriam or Don Juan would probably agree with Carlos Baker that Prometheus Unbound is Shelley’s “masterpiece”, and that it has been so regarded ever since its composition - “except by a few unreconstructed dissenters”.3 Baker was thinking of the kind of dissenter who prefers other things in Shelley: the political radical who finds the poem too ideal, the Peacock or Mary Shelley who prefers more “human passion”. But even those who are so unreconstructed that they dissent from much of Shelley’s work have still found Prometheus Unbound the epitome of all that they dissent from. The London Magazine in 1820 produced, says D. H. Reiman, a “triumph of Romantic critical theory” by finding in the poem “a symbol of the peaceful triumph of goodness over power”, while in 1821 William Hazlitt concentrated his criticism of Shelley on the same work, calling it “all volatile intellectual salt of tartar”.4KeywordsHuman MindEvil NatureMoral ExcellenceMoral InterestMoral LogicThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
