Contemptuous of the gap between the organisation’s pretensions and its performance and resentful of the anti-Western sentiments which were so often heard in it, the attitude of the Reagan administration to the UN fluctuated between thinly concealed indifference and vitriolic dislike. (Though the lead in the anti-UN campaign was taken by the Republicans, the Democrats were not far behind.1) This attitude was personified by the hard-edged, hectoring, right-wing ideologue who was sent to the UN by President Reagan as his ambassador in 1981: Jeane J.
