- W2481304806 abstract "Ovid's Narcissus evokes another story also organized about knowledge gone awry—Oedipus, that notorious Theban whom the poet refuses to discuss. Ovid moulds Narcissus' story around the most striking elements peculiar to Oedipus' myth, drawing particularly upon Sophocles' Oedipus Tyrannus. Using Lacan's analysis (based in Hegel's epistemology) of what must always remain hidden in intersubjectivity, this chapter shows how Oedipus' shadow falling on Narcissus points to knowledge and ignorance not exhausted by reference to a lover, or to any single other. Insight and blindness conditioned Oedipus' relationship to an entire city, subsuming all his complicated history with Thebes. Discerning Oedipus' figure in Narcissus invites another interpretation of the boy's story, a political one accounting for the way epistemology structures relations not only between subject and (beloved) object, but also between individual and society, citizen and polity. Reading Narcissus from this vantage elucidates how ‘knowing’ both weaves and ravels the polity." @default.
