- W2481897003 abstract "In the Essay on Shelley, Browning defines an ‘objective poet’ as one who works ‘with an immediate reference… to the common eye and apprehension of his fellow men’, careful ‘to supply [them] with no other materials than [they] can combine into an intelligible whole’.1 This definition both typifies Browning’s commitment to his public, and foreshadows its central problem. The poet will write only what his audience will find ‘intelligible’. The audience will take responsibility for combining the ‘materials’ into a ‘whole’. Each proposition represents a means by which the writer can abdicate from dominance over his reader. Ready intelligibility in a poem allows the reader to feel that its language corresponds to his own and is therefore not a foreign, ‘poetic’ idiom; reader-creativity completes the process by enthroning the reader in the author’s vacant seat. But however desireable in themselves, the two programmes proved inordinately difficult to combine. The story of Browning’s relation to the public of his period is the story of his struggle to get the reader to contribute to his poetry without sacrificing intelligibility, as he admits in a rather rueful letter of 1868:" @default.
