- W2481961710 abstract "The pragmatic view of explanation defended in the preceding chapters may be more precisely called the “pragmatic-rhetorical theory of explanation.”1 The underlying idea of this approach is that explanation should be understood in terms of its function of providing understanding rather than its content or logical structure, as traditionally assumed. I hold that explanation is a part of a communicative practice of answering explanation-seeking questions, which is intentionally directed, context-bound and persuasive; therefore, it should be understood accordingly. The standards of scientific explanation depend on different epistemic contexts, including technical, legal, political, religious, ethical or everyday explanations. What is an acceptable explanation in one context may not be acceptable in another because the particular evaluative standards we uphold in a given situation depend on the topic to be explained, our assumptions, background knowledge, interests in the answer, and level of cognitive sophistication. Sometimes interests are personal, but often they are communal as well, at least with respect to scientific explanations. Such interests may include truth, empirical adequacy, unification, derivability, predictive power, beauty, etc. However, none of these particular interests dictates any particular criterion as necessary for an acceptable explanation." @default.
