- W2482328199 abstract "Megalopolis is a highly emotive term. It has been used to identify and generate a widespread concern about the quality of the urban environment in Western Europe and America in the twentieth century.1 For the last hundred years, solutions to technical problems of urban growth such as water supply, drains and traffic congestion have reached new levels of competence and this, together with the growth of the world market economy, has made possible the prospect of unlimited urban expansion. What this means for the development of societies within which this occurs has not seemed so amenable to satisfactory solutions. For many, influenced by the concept of megalopolis, there has been a fear that somehow such urban growth had to be detrimental to the human spirit, to society, to communities, to families and to the individual. Twentieth-century ills of alienation, social division and violence were put down to the evil effects of megalopolis. While many have raised their voices to protest at unlimited urbanisation, two propagandists of their view stand out: Patrick Geddes and Lewis Mumford.2 Geddes first applied the term ‘megalopolis’ to modern urban sprawl and Mumford, Geddes’ disciple in his youth, gave it widest publicity." @default.
