- W2482600131 abstract "Of the many modern English poems which descend directly from the ‘Elegy’, the one which exhibits the most remarkable evolution in the direct line is Cowper’s famous ‘Cast-away’. ‘The Cast-away’ is very close to the ‘Elegy’ in its basic strategy. But the ‘Elegy’ is not the only Gray poem which served Cowper as model; ‘Cast-away’ also derives, as will be argued below, from Gray’s comic poem, ‘Ode on the Death of a Favourite Cat, Drowned in a Tub of Gold Fishes’. The major difference in Gray’s and Cowper’s work is that Cowper, writing some time after Gray, must exaggerate the shifts Gray made. Gray’s obscurity has served its purpose, shown the way in which the occasion could be usurped by that greater occasion: the mental event. Cowper, in ‘The Cast-away’, performs the usurpation in such a way as to emphasize what Gray had tried to make obscure: the wrenching of the occasional pathos from its ostensible object toward the mental occasion." @default.
