- W2482640739 abstract "Antigens undergo variations in two ways: (1) through DNA alterations introduced by errors in DNA (or RNA) replication or repair, recombination between nonidentical genes, and reassortment of gene segments and (2) through programmed variations that are also called phase variations, multiphasic antigenic variations, true antigenic variations, or antigenic variations. Viruses employ random variations to escape from the host immune defense that allows the viruses to establish chronic infections or evade life-long host immunity. Organisms with larger genomes than viruses cannot afford sloppy DNA replication and random variation of antigen genes. Therefore, they make a more modest contribution to antigenic variability. The simplest way to move genes relative to a fixed promoter is by gene inversion, but promoter inversion is another way to obtain similar results. The inversion is catalyzed by a site-specific DNA recombinase that recognizes a short DNA segment to flank the invertible segment on both sides." @default.
