- W2482719696 abstract "‘Character is fate’ is true of The Mayor of Casterbridge in a less obvious sense than may at first appear. To say that the story of the rise and fall of Michael Henchard is a parable of how your own deeds come home to roost is to misrepresent the narrative angle of the novel. However, it has been argued that Hardy’s Mayor is based on the central assumption of Christian literature that the gods are just and that, in the long run, one actually gets what one deserves. To see Hardy’s novel as the working out of some inexorable moral absolute is to reduce it to a universalist formula, and thereby deflect attention from what is peculiar to itself. It means also to see Henchard as the irredeemable arch offender—a perspective hardly shared by the narrator. The whole movement of the novel in fact seems to be leading away from moralist assumptions. It is the story of a character not susceptible to conventional moral categories. It presents a character which has to be discovered and the novel unfolds itself as the process of that discovery. For one of his imaginative subtlety Hardy is an extremely straightforward novelist who does not leave central issues in his novels for resourceful critics to infer." @default.
