- W2482856221 abstract "We encountered London’s Bethlem asylum and Bedlam, its mythical other in Chapter 2. For well over a century (from 1728 to 1855), medical care of the inmates was entrusted to successive generations of the Monro family. Like many practitioners of the ‘mad-doctoring trade’ at that time, they combined their public duties with lucrative private practices ministering to the better-off. In 1766, John Monro kept a notebook of his work with paying patients, detailing how he came to decide whether someone was mentally ill and what treatment to proscribe. Although he was often harsh in his judgements, dismissing patient’s speech as ‘nonsense’ or complaining that they were too ‘full of talk’ and liable to ‘ramble’, he did at least listen to what they told him (Stewart, 2003, p.12). In contrast, the speech of those committed to Bedlam, who were mostly either too poor to afford home care or deemed to be a danger to the community, was largely ignored and many were physically restrained with ‘leg irons, manacles, straitjackets and other instruments for intimidating patients’ (Wing, 1997, p.3). This overt brutality ended in the 1850s following an investigation by the Lunacy Commissioners into the maltreatment of two female patients, but the practice of discounting patients’ talk continued." @default.
