- W2482956538 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter discusses performance studies in biomedical research. Most commonly, performance tests are designed to assess specific functions, such as vision, audition, locomotion, or reaction time, as resulting from environmental insults. Methodology required to assess performance decrements involves a significant increase in time and effort. While the screening studies require research grade and acclimated primates, the background training time required to obtain asymptotic performance often consumes several months before the subjects can be exposed to an environment likely to produce performance changes. This pre-experiment training time is dependent largely upon the degree of complexity of the primate behavior that is required to answer the questions about the environment. Performance-decrement testing adds a dimension to classical physiological and medical determinants of environmental contaminants. Operant behavioral methodology applied to discrimination tasks yield subtle changes in performance that might remain unnoticed with usual examination procedures. These procedures yield data compatible with quantitative analysis, which allow rather accurate determinations of the magnitude of the performance decrement (from lethal to barely detectable) as well as the duration (from permanent irreversible effects to brief transient effects) of the behavioral change. Automated equipment required to test experimental subjects without exposing humans (experimenters, assistants, and handlers) adds to the costs inherent in this methodology, and it is difficult to find substitutes for the long training time required for some discrimination tasks." @default.
