Nearly 1 to 5 percent of population has cerebral aneurysm; however 50 to 80 percent of these cases never face rupture of cerebral arteries. There is a high mortality rate of 45 percent in case of rupture. Many people with cerebral aneurysms are unaware. It is plausible to assume that arteries with aneurysm are more susceptible to injury in case of high stress and strain created in contact or non-contact head acceleration (blunt impacts). The purpose of this study is to investigate the response of cerebral arteries with and without aneurysm under external mechanical loadings. A two-dimensional (2D) finite element model of head in sagittal plane has been created. The most common site of cerebral aneurysm is at circle of Willis, more specifically anterior communication artery (ACoA). A portion of ACoA with and without aneurysm has been created in the 2D model. The model was analyzed under dynamic loading. The stress and strain fields were investigated. It was concluded that the strain field is higher in aneurysm case comparing to normal case.
