- W2483366992 abstract "In 1991, after a lapse of just over half a century, the Baltic peoples of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania rejoined the world community of nation-states. The Baltic States were of course hardly unique among the former Soviet Union’s republics in taking advantage of the failure of the short-lived period of perestroika or reform communism (1985–90) to establish themselves as sovereign states. What however does distinguish them is that this was not the first time their peoples had struggled successfully for a historically sustained period of independent statehood. In being able to look back upon such an era of recent statehood (1918–40), all three Baltic nations possessed powerful national symbols to mobilise their peoples’ support for independent sovereignty. This recourse to a unique political history undoubtedly contributed both to the character of their national reawakenings and to the role that their republics were to play in leading the way in challenging the territorial legitimacy of the Soviet empire." @default.
